Seeing Diane Arbus is a short film about A movie theater projectionist with dwarfism has a fateful, frightening reunion with the famously voyeuristic photographer, Diane Arbus.
Directed by Lindsay Zibach, former assistant to Guillermo Del Toro, the film premiered on October of 2022 at Screamfest LA.
We were tasked by Lindsay to create an opening title for the film that captured the right tone. Case study below.
MOTION DESIGN CASE STUDY
Round 1 - 3D looks
After a tone meeting with Lindsay where she mentioned she wanted the title to feel like it was part of the movie, we decided to take a pass at some 3D designs. The subsequent animation integrated with the opening shot of the movie - a 90º tilt down to an empty old-style movie house, from a set of stage lights. To the right is our comped animation test, and below, the 3D looks we generated.
Round 2 - 2D looks
After seeing the 3D title and loving it - Lindsay had an epiphany. This film screams analogue. The techniques of photography - both artistic and technical - permeates the film, and as if that were to drive the filmic tone, much of the film is set in a movie projection booth.
With the intention of capturing a flavor of this tangible, analogue tone, we created some 2D look variations using the textures of paper, bleeding fluid, and light.
we landed on an organic blending of paper textures, liquid flows, and color inversion.
Final Result
This film screamed analogue. The techniques of photography - both artistic and technical - permeates the film, and as if that were to drive the filmic tone, much of the film is set in a movie projection booth.
We explored several different directions including some 3D options. With the intention of capturing a flavor of chemical photo development, we landed on a 2D organic blending of paper textures, liquid flows, and color inversion.
